Electricity tariffs in Sweden: when lower market prices lower your bill

Information checked:

In this guide

Two households looking at the same chart can face very different bills. One pays for electricity quarter by quarter; the other has a monthly or fixed energy price. Before planning around cheap periods, check which arrangement you actually have—and how your network operator charges for delivery.

Choose your area and identify your contract

Sweden has four bidding zones, SE1–SE4, ordered from north to south. Compare your home's area, not whichever zone currently looks cheapest. Svenska kraftnät: day-ahead electricity trading.

With a quarter-hour contract, your measured consumption is priced against the corresponding quarters under the contract's formula. With a monthly-price contract, the month's energy rate is determined retrospectively, commonly using the supplier customer group's consumption weighting. Moving your own washing cycle to a cheap quarter does not directly give you that quarter's energy price. Ei now calls this second type månadspris to distinguish it from quarter-hour pricing. Ei: monthly-price terminology.

A single-rate fixed contract does not track the day's spot prices. You may still save through lower consumption or an applicable time-dependent network tariff. Check your actual contract rather than assuming that “variable” means quarter-hourly. Ei: contract types.

The meter and the contract must match

Quarter-hour readings alone do not mean you have a quarter-hour contract. Ei explains the right to request quarter-hour measurement without an extra metering charge. Confirm the effective measurement and contract start dates with your network operator and supplier. Ei: electricity meters and measurement.

Use your own interval consumption to compare tariffs. The chart's simple day average is not your consumption-weighted price if most of your electricity is used in expensive periods. An EV or flexible heating may give you more scheduling options than a small household with little movable demand, but flexibility is not a guarantee of savings. Ei: quarter-hour contracts.

Supplier examples: the advertised margin is not the whole offer

These selected examples were checked on 10 September 2026. They are not a ranking, a complete supplier list or a personalized quote. Do not interpret an unverified fee as zero.

Supplier What the published terms establish What to compare
Tibber Quarter-hour pricing, a fixed markup of 6 öre/kWh excluding VAT, variable procurement costs, and SEK 49/month including VAT. The fixed markup is 7.5 öre with VAT, before variable procurement costs. Confirm all additions and post-promotion fees. Tibber contract summary
Vattenfall Its quarter-hour terms separate area spot price, variable procurement costs, certificate charge, fixed spot markup, annual fee and VAT. Obtain the dated amounts for your offered contract; the terms' list of components is not a final price. Vattenfall household terms, section 13c
Fortum Offers a quarter-hour product and warns that the outcome depends on when you use electricity. Obtain the actual monthly fee, markup, other additions and exit terms. No exact fee is assumed here. Fortum quarter-hour product

As a purely invented comparison on an identical VAT basis, SEK 40/month plus SEK 0.02/kWh and SEK 0/month plus SEK 0.10/kWh have equal additions at 500 kWh/month. Below that, the no-monthly-fee option costs less in these two additions; above it, the other option does. This is arithmetic, not a comparison of the suppliers above.

Network fees and taxes are separate

Your bill includes electricity supply and network delivery, even if they appear on one invoice. VAT also applies to energy tax. Check whether quoted rates already include VAT before adding anything. Konsumenternas Energimarknadsbyrå: the electricity bill. The standard VAT rate is 25%. Skatteverket: 2026 tax rates.

Sweden's ordinary 2026 energy tax is 36.0 öre/kWh before VAT, equivalent to 45.0 öre with 25% VAT. Eligible households in certain municipalities have a 9.6-öre reduction before VAT, leaving 26.4 öre before VAT. Do not determine eligibility from SE1 or SE2 alone. Skatteverket: electricity tax from January 2026.

A power-based network fee is not compulsory everywhere from 2027. Ei repealed that blanket requirement in June 2026. This did not ban such fees or require existing ones to disappear. Check your operator's actual tariff. Ei: power-based fees.

Where a power-based fee applies, ask which hours, averaging periods and peaks are counted. Charging the car while heating and cooking may increase the billed peak. Spreading those loads can help, but only if it changes the operator's charging calculation. Cheaper spot energy and lower network costs are two separate objectives.

An illustrative 200 kWh bill

Assume a consumption-weighted energy price of SEK 0.80/kWh, combined supplier additions of SEK 0.05/kWh and SEK 40/month, and a network tariff of SEK 0.20/kWh plus SEK 200/month. These five inputs are invented, exclude VAT and are not an offer from any supplier or network operator. The example uses ordinary 2026 energy tax, no tax reduction and no power-based fee.

Component Calculation Excl. VAT
Exchange energy 200 × SEK 0.80 SEK 160.00
Assumed supplier additions 200 × SEK 0.05 SEK 10.00
Assumed supplier monthly fee Fixed SEK 40.00
Assumed network delivery 200 × SEK 0.20 SEK 40.00
Assumed network monthly fee Fixed SEK 200.00
Energy tax 200 × SEK 0.36 SEK 72.00
Subtotal SEK 522.00
VAT, 25% SEK 522 × 0.25 SEK 130.50
Illustrative total SEK 652.50

That is about SEK 3.26 per consumed kWh, but moving one kWh does not save SEK 3.26: the monthly charges remain. The example excludes discounts, extra services, solar-export credits and any separate charges not contained in the assumed network tariff. Real invoice rounding may differ.

Negative prices and a practical switching checklist

Using the same assumptions and full negative-price pass-through, an exchange price of −SEK 0.10/kWh still leaves SEK 0.51/kWh before VAT in variable costs: −0.10 + 0.05 + 0.20 + 0.36. Monthly fees are extra. A negative market price therefore does not necessarily mean you are paid to consume.

  • Compare a representative year of your own consumption in the correct zone, including winter and a high-price scenario.
  • Check all procurement additions, monthly or annual fees, VAT and the price after any introductory offer.
  • Confirm any existing binding period or exit charge before ordering a new contract.
  • Check the network tariff separately, particularly if car charging or heating could create a new peak.
  • Treat SEK-converted website prices as an informational display, not a guarantee of your supplier's contractual currency conversion or final price.
  • Move only genuinely flexible demand while maintaining safe appliance operation and comfortable temperatures. Solar-export income requires its own contract calculation.
